The Selection Game of the Winter War
In the darkest months of the Winter War, Finnish soldiers faced impossible odds. Missions behind enemy lines were deemed suicidal—necessary, but deadly. When volunteers were scarce, the unit had to decide who would go.
They didn't draw straws. They played Koukka.
A game of chance, intuition, and cold calculation. It wasn't played for money, and it wasn't played for fun. It was played to decide who would survive, and who would march into the white void.
Every soldier chooses a number. A silent prayer hidden in the mind.
Players attempt to guess the numbers that belong to no one. To find the empty spaces is to find safety.
One by one, players are eliminated from the game. The last player standing—the one who failed to find safety—is selected for the mission.
In Koukka, the winner was the first to walk away. The loser was the last to stay.
